Quick answer: Open the film door on the back of your Instax Mini, line up the yellow mark on the film cartridge with the yellow mark inside the camera, push the cartridge in flat, close the door, turn the camera on and press the shutter once. The black protective sheet (the dark slide) comes out and the counter changes to 10. You’re ready to shoot.
The steps are almost identical for every camera that takes Instax Mini film, including the Instax Mini 12, Mini 11, Mini 9, Mini 8, Mini 40, Mini 99 and the Mini Evo. Only the power button and door latch move around.
What You Need
- An Instax Mini camera with fresh batteries (two AA for the Mini 12, 11 and 9; the Mini Evo and Mini 99 use rechargeable batteries).
- A pack of Instax Mini film. Square and Wide film will not fit.
- A shady spot. Never load film in direct sunlight.
Step-by-Step: Loading Instax Mini Film
- Check the counter. If it shows a number other than S or 0, there is still film inside. Don’t open the back or you will ruin the remaining shots.
- Open the film door. Slide or press the latch on the side or top of the back door and let it swing open.
- Unwrap the cartridge. Tear the foil pouch and hold the cartridge by its edges. Don’t press the rectangular window on the back; that pushes the film forward.
- Match the yellow marks. The yellow line on the cartridge must align with the yellow mark in the film compartment.
- Insert it flat. Slide it straight in and press lightly until it sits flush.
- Close the door until it clicks.
- Turn the camera on. On the Mini 12, twist the lens to “ON”. On the Mini 11 and 9, press the button next to the lens.
- Eject the dark slide. Press the shutter. The black film cover comes out, and the counter shows 10.

Common Mistakes (and How to Avoid Them)
- Opening the back mid-pack: exposes and wastes the film inside.
- Squeezing the cartridge: can bend the sheets and cause jams.
- Ignoring the yellow marks: a reversed cartridge won’t seat properly.
- Pulling the photo out: let the rollers eject it; pulling causes streaks.
- Shaking the print: Instax film doesn’t need it and shaking can cause uneven development.
Troubleshooting
The dark slide didn’t come out
Check that the batteries are fresh and the door is fully closed, then press the shutter again. Weak batteries are the most common cause.
The counter is stuck or blinking
Replace the batteries. On the Mini 12, a flashing orange light usually means low power or a film issue; see our Instax Mini 12 orange light guide.
Photos come out blank or too bright
That’s an exposure problem, not a loading problem. Read why Instax photos come out overexposed.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many photos are in a pack of Instax Mini film?
Each cartridge holds 10 shots. Twin packs contain two cartridges.
Can I remove a half-used cartridge?
Only in complete darkness. Opening the door in light ruins the top sheet and usually several more.
Does Instax Mini film fit every Instax camera?
No. It fits Instax Mini cameras and printers only, not Square or Wide models.
